Leader: Dr. Greg Carey
Dr. Greg Carey has been teaching the New Testament at Lancaster Seminary since 1999. He loves the church and he loves Hartman Center. (He and a grandson attended camp last summer.)
Dr. Carey has volunteered to offer our FIRST Congregational Life Retreat of 2020 using his newest book, “Stories Jesus Told – How To Read A Parable”. Listen to what Nathan Baxter, Retired Episcopal Bishop and former Dean of Washington National Cathedral has to say about him. “Greg Carey has a rare gift as a scholar and teacher, that is, his ability to present biblical scholarship in ways that stimulate critical thinking and also inspire. Retreat participants will find themselves engaged in conversations about the parables of Jesus that are challenging, refreshing, and sometimes humorous.”
Cost for the retreat housed in Michaux Lodge is $140. (Two nights lodging and six meals.) Commuter cost is $75. (Covers all six meals.) Register online by 2/7/20.

COUNTDOWN TO OPENING DAY (Fishing Season of course!)
Monday, March 16, 2020 (2 p.m.) – Wednesday, March 18, 2020 (noon)
Hosted by: Dave Bushnell and friends
So much of Fishing is ANTICIPATION don’t you agree. Our Retreat will be too early to fish public waters BUT we can have great fellowship getting our tackle ready. Have you always wanted to learn how to fly fish? (Actually, it’s best to practice lots before even fishing the streams). Or how about participating in the “art” of tying flies. Bring your equipment along and teach someone how to do it!
Maybe you’d like to watch and help make a spinning rod or two. Lessons and materials will be provided.
Of course we will have lots of videos about fishing and at least one feature film that everyone will enjoy. Bring your favorite lures. You can show us all how you fish the lures when we can head out to the pond.
Cost for the retreat housed in Michaux Lodge is $140. (Two nights lodging and six meals.) Register online by 3/11/20.
If you would like to build your very own rod email Dave Bushnell to discuss the cost. (email@example.com)
What is Good Leadership?
Tuesday, April 14, 2020 (10 a.m.) – Wednesday, April 15 (3 p.m.)
Leader: Dr. Carrie Call, Transitional Conference Minister, Penn Central Conference United Church of Christ
The church needs excellent leadership. Not only for current challenges (of which there are many) but also as we move into an uncertain future. Clergy and lay leaders are invited to delve more deeply into the new science of leadership at this two-day retreat. You will consider and explore your own leadership style, learn what effective leadership looks like, and consider case studies in how to respond to leadership challenges in today’s church. We guarantee you will come away with new, useful insights and practices. All skill levels and degrees of experience are welcomed. This will be a collegial and inclusive gathering whether you’re a seasoned leader or a neophyte. All are welcome.
The cost of the retreat in Michaux Lodge is $85.00. (Includes one night lodging and 4 meals.) Commuter cost is $50. (Includes all meals.) Register online before 4/8/20.
LEARNING TO SEE – A Photography Retreat led by Nelson Dodson
Monday, April 27, 2020 (2 p.m) – Wednesday, April 29, 2020 (noon)
Leader: Nelson Dodson
Nelson’s retreat plan…..“A camera can only see what you tell it to see. I hope to give assignments that make you think and really see the potential in what you photograph.
I have taught art and photography most of my life and I can’t separate the two. The general definition of the word photography is ‘painting with light,’ to that end, we will explore subjects that make you think in more creative ways to improve your photos and your imagination.
We will spend some time exploring ‘Post Processing’ with a brief introduction to a variety of programs and learning how to make you camera/phone behave as you want it to.”
I hold a BFA in Art Education from The Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA in Painting from Rochester Institute of Technology. I taught Art, Photography and Computer Graphics in the School District of the City of York for 35 years, 10 years part time At York College of Pennsylvania and evening classes at York Vocational Technical School and The York Art Association.
I still try to challenge myself with creative assignments. One of my Favorites being, shooting a photograph a day for an entire year. You can see some of these photos on my web pages here.
What you will need to bring:
- A camera, this can be a digital SLR, a point and shoot and or a smart phone or all of these.
- A thumb drive to transfer images
- An open mind
What would be great to bring but not necessary:
- A laptop or tablet computer
- An extra card for your camera
- Lots of questions, some of which I will be able to answer
- The manual for your camera/phone
Cost for the retreat housed in Michaux Lodge is $140. (Two nights lodging and six meals.) Commuter cost is $75. (Covers all six meals.) Register online by 4/22/20.
